Senior Manager, Communications & External Affairs
The Senior Manager, Communications & External Affairs is a full-time role, serving as GLOS’s editorial lead for communications, stakeholder engagement, and external relations. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this role is responsible for elevating GLOS’s visibility through high-quality content, proactive media relations, and effective stakeholder communications. This position will supervise GLOS’s Communications Team, including the Communications Specialist and Strategic Initiatives Manager, along with any communications-related fellows and interns. The role includes responsibility for regional stakeholder tracking, public sector informational reporting, audience-facing messaging, media relations, stakeholder communications, and editorial approach.
This is an in-person or hybrid role dependent upon the location of the selected candidate. This position is open to U.S. Citizens or permanent residents.
Preferred Experience and Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in a relevant field.
- Familiarity with Great Lakes issues, freshwater or ocean science, or environmental policy.
- Prior experience supporting or liaising with nonprofit boards.
- Experience with federal grant environment standards and/or federally funded (e.g., NOAA, IOOS) grant environments.
- Background in graphic design or visual storytelling.
- Proficiency with CRM platforms, WordPress, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Salary and Benefits
- This is a full-time, exempt in person position with a salary range of $98,000-$110,000.

Great Lakes Engagement Fellowship
GLOS is seeking one Engagement Fellow to join our small, mission-driven team for a hands-on, mentored fellowship experience at the intersection of ocean and Great Lakes science, community engagement, and public service. This fellowship is designed as an extension of a student’s graduate education: an opportunity to grow into new skills, gain exposure to the day-to-day work of a regional nonprofit that serves both the scientific community and the general public, and build a career in Great Lakes and coastal science policy and engagement.
This is a one year opportunity and will begin January 4, 2027 and will end January 3, 2028. Students who have recently completed, or are within one academic term of completing, a graduate degree or professional program at an accredited U.S. or Canadian institution are eligible for the fellowship. Applicants must demonstrate interest in Great Lakes resources, community and participatory science, and the binational policy decisions that affect those resources.
The GLOS Engagement Fellowship is an in-person program. Fellows work full-time on site at the GLOS offices located in Ann Arbor, MI, USA (these are not remote or hybrid experiences).
Application package must include:
- Two signed letters of recommendation;
- A personal education and career goal statement emphasizing the applicant’s abilities and what the applicant expects to gain from the fellowship experience;
- Personal and academic curriculum vitae (not to exceed two pages);
- Clear, scanned copies of all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts;
- And a listing of classes completed and/or planned for the two academic terms preceding the fellowship start date (not to exceed one page).

FAQ – Great Lakes Fellowships
Can/should recommendations be submitted by the writers? How should they submit to GLOS?
GLOS will accept direct submissions from the writers of recommendations, if that is what they prefer. They should email those to recruit@glos.org by the application deadline (November 13, 2026) using the subject line:
Recommendation – GLOS [Engagement OR Communications] Fellowship – [Full Name of Applicant]
Are GLOS Fellowships in-person or virtual?
The GLOS Fellowships are in-person programs. Fellows work full-time onsite at the GLOS offices located in the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, alongside GLOS staff and NOAA researchers. These are not remote or hybrid experiences, though mentors may approve occasional remote days for travel or bad weather.
Can I apply for both the Engagement and Communication Fellowships?
Yes. Applicants can apply for both fellowships. However, they must submit two separate applications, with relevant information and recommendations for both fellowship opportunities.
Great Lakes Communications Fellowship

This fellowship is designed as an extension of a student’s graduate education: an opportunity to grow into new skills, focusing on strategic communications, science communication, and public awareness of binational Great Lakes data and information.
The GLOS Great Lakes Communications Fellowship will begin January 4, 2027 and will end January 3, 2028, with the possibility of extension to a second year based on performance and continued funding. Students who have recently completed or are within one academic term of completing a graduate degree or professional program at an accredited U.S. or Canadian institution are eligible for the fellowship. Applicants must demonstrate interest in science communication, public outreach, and the binational policy decisions affecting Great Lakes resources.
The GLOS Communications Fellowship is an in-person program. Fellows work full-time on site at the GLOS offices located in Ann Arbor, MI, USA (these are not remote or hybrid experiences).
Application package must include:
- Two signed letters of recommendation;
- A personal education and career goal statement emphasizing the applicant’s abilities and what the applicant expects to gain from the fellowship experience;
- Curriculum vitae (not to exceed two pages);

- A communications writing sample or portfolio of up to three short pieces (e.g., a press release, social media content, blog post, video script, or explainer graphic);
