GLOS Launches New Boaters Forecast Tool for the St. Lawrence River
ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 31, 2012 – The Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS), working to coordinate and enhance the network of observations and data access in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River system, announces the launch of its new Boaters Forecast: St. Lawrence River tool –data.glos.us/boaters. Developed for recreational boaters in the St. Lawrence River, the new tool provides information on water currents and depth to help boaters plan a safe and enjoyable boating day.The easy-to-use, web-based format was customized to address information needs specific to boaters on the St. Lawrence River, including information on marina and boat launch locations. “I enjoyed using the website. It was very straightforward,” said John Cannon, a St. Lawrence boater. “I will be using the information when boating in the 1000 Islands next week. This tool will be very helpful to anticipate changes in river conditions. Thanks!”
The tool was developed in partnership with New York Sea Grant, and the NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL). GLOS held a series of meetings in Alexandria Bay and Ogdensburg, N.Y. to determine the data needs of the St. Lawrence boating community. GLOS used this information to support and enhance hydrodynamic modeling efforts in the St. Lawrence River already underway by researchers at the Cooperative Institute for Limnology and Ecosystem Research (CILER) and NOAA GLERL. The new tool allows boaters to access NOAA’s modeling output along with real-time data and other information of interest to harbor communities.
The Gulf of Maine Research Institute, a leader in the development of ocean observing products and services, developed the user interface for the tool.
GLOS is dedicated to creating a fully integrated, bi-national observing system that provides products and services to decision-makers, resource managers and other data users. In partnership with federal, state and local government agencies, research institutions, industries, private corporations, bi-national organizations, and not for profit organizations, GLOS connects data users with data providers in ways that are supportive of policy and decision-making.
