Survey
Please respond to the following items. All responses will be shared with and considered by the GLOS Steering Committee. Comments received by August 23, 2004, will be considered at the Steering Committee's next meeting.

1) The Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS) framework focuses on 11 "subsystems" that address various areas of data needs and applications. Based on your needs and interests, please check your top 3 subsystems.

open lake observations
(buoy systems)
hydrodynamic modeling
(computer models)
science vessel
(ship observations)
ecological forecasting
(e.g., beach closures)
interconnecting waterways
(river sensors)
mass balance modeling
(computer modeling to estimate the flow of pollutants between air, water, and soil)
nearshore data collection
(coastal sensors)
information integration
(manage data and produce value-added products for citizens and other users)
atmospheric
(airborne observations)
education
(help citizens use GLOS information and improve science education)
remote sensing
(satellite observations)

2) GLOS is designed to serve the needs of many user groups including the scientific community, resource managers, educators, recreational boaters, commercial maritime interests and municipal water managers.

For example, CoastWatch (www.coastwatch.msu.edu) provides Great Lakes surface water temperature data useful to sport and charter anglers via the Internet, while the COOL Classroom (www.coolclassroom.org) provides teachers and students with an opportunity to use coastal data in their classrooms.

Are there other user groups that might benefit from products from this initiative? And, if so, what services might GLOS provide?

Potential User Groups (based on your knowledge of regional needs and interests, please check your top 3 priorities)

Scientific community
Resource managers
Educators, K-12
Educators, College
Educators, informal outreach
Students K-12 & college
Recreational boaters
Commercial maritime transportation
Municipal water managers
Anglers and charter vessels
Beach users
Eco-tourism

Other potential clientele, please indicate:

Potential Uses / Services (based on your knowledge of regional needs and interests, please check your top 3 priorities)

Scientific data for research

Data for decisionmaking
(e.g., will the beach be closed due to bacteria or harmful algae?)

Real-time and archived data used in interactive curricula by K-12 students and teachers

Real-time and archived data used in interactive, informal education
(public aquaria, etc.)

Real-time and archived data used in college courses
Rip current prediction / observation

Wind and wave data
(e.g., how do I plan my charter fishing strategy today?)

Fish mortality
(e.g., is a cold water or low oxygen water event responsible for a recent fish kill?)

Lake levels, flows, currents

Ice coverage

Storm prediction / tracking

Improved weather forecasting

3) Are there any specific monitoring/observations that you feel are needed but not currently collected or publicly accessible?

4) Are you satisfied with the reliability of current short- and long-term environmental predictions of Great Lakes water levels, waves, currents, water temperatures? Please explain why or why not?

5) Integration of information on the Internet is a key goal of GLOS. Are there other media that products should be designed for? Please check your top 3 preferences for how you would most like to receive GLOS information.
